B. NARRATIVE SECTION

Section 1 The Shining Light Foundation began in 1997 with the mission of providing students from low income families with the resources they need for healthy development and full participation in their school activities and curriculum. Our current programs continue to provide funding for musical instruments, academic tutoring, school supplies and field trips for individual students for whom funding is not available from any other source.

Section 2 The goal of this project is to provide musical instruments, equipment, and essential supplies, field trips, and tutoring services to students enrolled in Lafayette Parish public schools and in grades K-6 as requested by teachers, counselors, and principals who identify unmet needs

Section 3 The program funding will benefit 100 students for field trips of approximately $10.00 each, and 20 students for partial funding of musical instruments for $50.00 each.

Section 4 The project will continue with private funding, grants, and membership fees after JLL funding ends.

Section 5 Measurable outcomes are as follows:

1. Knowledge gained from the activity

2. Bonding with classmates through shared experiences

3. Increased peer group identification and acceptance

4. Increased access to positive role models

5. Enhances self esteem

6. Potential for cultivation of interests and talents

7. Affirmation of community awareness and support

Section 6 The Shining Light Foundation's project goals are entirely within the Junior League's focus area. The healthy development of children can only be achieved when every child, regardless of family income, has access to programs that provide peer group acceptance, enhanced self esteem, affirmation from the community, and the potential for cultivation of interests and talents.

Section 7 This project is a continuation of our previous grants of musical instruments and related supplies, field trips and tutoring for students in the Lafayette Parish public school system, grades kindergarten though sixth grade.

Section 8 No other agency is currently providing these services. Our project extends to all schools in Lafayette Parish, for grade levels K through 6. Our project responds to the needs of individual students rather than to school organizations. We respond to numerous requests of teachers, counselors, and principals who identify unmet needs.

Section 9 If the project is partially funded, it will remain viable but will be limited in scope to the funds available within the Foundation's budget of $2,000.00.

We will reduce the number of students who can participate in field trips, band, tutoring, and other basic activities of the school curriculum.
