John
showed pictures of the 3 young men from Acadiana High School honored
with a dinner out at a restaurant of their choosing with John for
each designing, building, and racing a small car in his class.
Guests were invited to speak first and, if possible, limit their
presentation to 10 minutes each.
Jeff Debetz with David Thibodaux STEM school presented an application as a special project for Nicholas Porter, an 8th grade student, who must enroll in summer school. He represented Nicholas as an excellent young man who had faced many struggles during the school year. Cost of summer school is $225.00. David and one of Nicholas’ teachers have each put up $30.00 of their own money. Board Members agreed that this is a worthy special project. Donations received: Guest Jason Muffoletta $100.00; Cynthia Dauphin $20.00; Cheryl Evans $15.00; Shauna LeBlanc $20.00; Mildred Baker $25.00. The balance paid from our treasury.
James Balkenhal, Band Director, in several Lafayette Parish schools was invited to our meeting to accept presentation of a bell lyre which was donated to Shining Light Foundation by a friend of Board Member Cheryl Evans. He has also agreed to accept donation of numerous instruments from Rick Burch, which includes a bass guitar and amplifier, a 88 weighted keyed roland 600 electric piano with stand and bench, and complete PA system. He will pick up the equipment from Rick Burch. Photos of James with the bell lyre were taken for a next newsletter.
Tanya Cormier, a registered nurse, appeared to inquire about expanding our program to include psychological counseling for children in the Parish Schools. Shauna, who is a teacher, pointed out that teachers cannot refer a child to an outside source, that the school counselors, if they feel the situation necessitated it, would refer the child to the Health & Wellness Dept. which could refer the child to an “out source” which is registered with the School System.
Angie
Simmons, teacher at Duson Elementary School, appeared to ask
for support of her applications for 3 children to attend day camp:
Cajun Camp at Deaf Action Center for the children who live with their
great-grandmother to have opportunities to participate in
activities and excursions in the community. The cost of the
camp is $150.00 per week for 2 weeks for each child. The
children are Alyssa Miller, Abby Miller, and Ryan Miller. It
was agreed that Angie will contact the great-grandmother to find out
if and how much she could contribute and will send the information to
John. On motion of John, seconded by Hayley, it was agreed that
if the great-grandmother would pay at least 25%, requests are
approved.
Subsequent to the meeting John notified Carolyn
that the total amount needed from Shining Light for all 3 children to
attend the camp is $262.50.
On motion of Cheryl, seconded by Sandra, Minutes of Meeting held Monday, May 4, 2015 approved.
