MINUTES OF MEETING HELD: Monday, May 10, 2004, 5:30 p.m.

On motion of Melissa,
seconded by Mike, the Minutes of Meeting held on April 12, 2004 approved.
Guest: Christy Sharon with
Sylvan Learning Center spoke to the group about the Center, its various
learning programs, summer workshops for children, and its fees.
Thank you note from Melissa
Douet was read. Thank you notes from
students who received awards to attend a field trip to the Baton Rouge Zoo were
read.
Treasurer’s Report
We have a current balance of
$14,587.16 total.
Carolyn inquired about grants
from the Arts Council and from Citi Group and learned that the Arts Council
awards only to specific causes involving the arts and that Citi Group does not
make an award requested by a commissioned employee.
Old Business
Bruce advised he will work
with Lou regarding the newsletter and getting her computer set up.
Tony Moore presented our new
stationery and envelopes as his personal donation to the organization.
New Business:
On motion of Ruth, seconded
by Julie, 4 students approved to receive awards in the amount of $50 per
student, 2 students per session, for the Sylvan Learning Center’s Writing Camp
this summer. Christy Sharon will select
the 4 students to receive the awards after talking with their school
counselors. The balance of the cost for
each session will be paid $25 by the parent and any remaining cost will be
awarded by Sylvan Learning Center.
Applications:
On motion of Julie, seconded
by Mike, application from Live Oak Elementary School to award $13.00 ($10.50
for the bus and $2.50) for trip to Baton Rouge to visit USS Kidd to Oeshanna
Edmond, approved.
Application from Alice
Boucher Elementary School for Latrell White to attend classes in phonics
comprehension sponsored by LSU to be held at First Baptist Church at a cost of
$299 plus $23 for materials. Carolyn
contacted the student’s mother, Monique Bernard, while we were still in session
to inquire if the mother was willing and able to get the child to the 2 hour sessions
per day and was informed that the mother could not take off from work to get
the child to these sessions and had no other reliable transportation to get the
child there. Consequently, the
application is considered withdrawn.
It was agreed that there
would be no meetings in June or July.
Next meeting scheduled for
Monday, August 9, 2004 at 5:30 pm at the Smith Barney Office, 400 E. Kaliste
Saloom.
