Letters to sponsors, participants and bidders have been mailed.

Channel 10 camera and crew were on the scene and clips of the event were shown on television.

Review Recent Educational Assistance

Ruth Duhon shopped for supplies to fill the 50 bags for 10 children each at Evangeline Elementary, J. W. Faulk Elementary, J. W. James Elementary, Vermillion Elementary, and Alice Boucher Elementary Schools.  She filled 50 bags for a total of $104.95 and this amount was approved for reimbursal to Ruth.

It came to Carolyn’s attention that Petroleum Helicopters Inc. is in the process of replacing many or all of its computers and were simply throwing them away.  Mike contacted PHI and learned that the computers still have useful lives, that Shining Light Foundation is free to act as an intermediary to donate the computers, but PHI wants no publicity from the donation.  Carolyn contacted Donna Denny, Director of Instructional Technology, Lafayette Parish School Board, who advised her that the Parish Schools could certainly use the computers in its Microsoft “Freshstart” Program.  Carolyn contacted Francis Miller at PHI and made arrangements for the School Board truck to pick up 10 computers a week until all are picked up.  We are unsure of the exact number.

Carolyn, Michelle, and Mike will set up a photo session for publicity purposes with Christine Setley at the School Board when some of the computers are being delivered .

Plans for the 2003-2004 school year

Melissa has made revisions to the Scholarship Applications which were reviewed by all members present.  Further revisions were suggested and approved and Melissa will again present the revised Applications at the next meeting for review.  The Applications need not be distributed until October.

Melissa announced that there will be an all day teachers’ meeting at Alice Boucher Elementary School on August 13, 2003 from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm if Carol and Julie wish to attend part of the time to speak about the Shining Light Foundation’s program.  Carol will contact Julie about going.

Other business

Melissa suggested that Shining Light might consider setting up a website where the teachers could get the latest information about Shining Light.  Bruce Snow and Tony Moore will look into what is involved in setting up a website.

Michelle reported that the lady who had wanted to start a Shining Light in Iberia Parish has now moved to Vermilion Parish.

Meeting adjourned at 6:45 pm.

Next meeting will be held Monday, September 8, 2003, at 5:30 pm, at Smith Barney Office, 400 E. Kaliste Saloom, Lafayette, LA
